"oh my god this computer sucks !"
Get rid of the junk
For a geek like me buying a new computer means having to spend a few hours going through it and making the computer mine. A task I actually enjoy. Now I'm not suggesting that everyone spend a few hours going right through their computers, in fact most people would find what I do very boring, but I am suggesting that you take a quick look at what's installed on your computer and get rid of the junk you don't want.

A computer is nothing more than a tool, much like a filing cabinet in a lot of ways, so if you think of that tool as such then consider what it would be like if a filing cabinet were filled with junk, consider the amount of time it would take you to find the files you did need.

So this is where you start. There is a program called add and remove programs built into the windows operating system. It's in the control panel and usually under programs. Start up the add and remove programs and first start by having a look at what's installed on your computer. If you have to you can even write down what's in there so you can refer back to it at a later time. (Capture the screen and print a copy for later.) If you come across anything in there that you don't recognize then looking it up on the Internet can help you to understand just what it is and wether you need it in your computer.

If you find a program that you know you don't need, highlight it and click on remove program. Simply follow the instructions that follow and be careful not to remove something you need in your system.

Now it really is as simple as I've just described, BUT, It's been my experience that the majority of people don't do this because of that last sentence in the last paragraph, They think they're going to screw up their computer and the fear of that actually allows them to screw up their computers over a longer period of time.

So, look at what's in there, look it up on the web then take it out if you don't need it.  And check often as it starts to pile up quick when you're adding programs to your computer.
In windows 7 I went to remove programs, found skype highlighted it and then removed it from my system. If you're at all unsure of what the program is or what it does then leave it in there.

Try not to let fear and common sense get in the way here, I've spent more time cleaning junk out of old computers than I have actually repairing old computers. Cluttered junk can make any computer new or old, sluggish.
