At the very least you need some sort of protection on your computer. I tell people and have told them for years to download and use the free version of Avast antivirus.
Avast is an easy to use system designed to protect you as you surf the web and with the ability to do a boot time scan its been invaluable in my efforts to save and clean up old computers.
The boot time scan, Avast antivirus once its been loaded onto your system has the ability to schedule a scan which will shut down your system, reboot to a black screen which will run before windows starts and completely scan your entire computer. The advantage here is the fact that windows doesnt get a chance to start up which stops the virus from starting up. Avast will catch and destroy the virus before it has a chance to do any damage.
The boot time scan does take a while to complete so dont be in any hurry to get back online, but it does do a very thorough job.
Starting a boot time scan, once Avast has been installed and updated you can now double click on the Avast icon, a window will open with the control panel for Avast. Click on scan then on boot time scan, then schedule now, now click on restart computer and the process will begin.
Sandboxing, Come and play in Avasts sandbox, a virtual world where Avast will open any suspicious program, allow you to run and play with it, keep track of any changes the program has made to your system, then once you close the program the virtual world dissolves and any changes made go with it. Choose auto sandboxing when you set up avast for worry free surfing on the web.
